Listening to the Child, Part 1

Child psychotherapy is an exciting yet demanding field. Children can present with confusing and even debilitating symptoms and reactions that not only impact them, but the family and larger environment as well. A therapist has to factor into all his/her considerations the child’s developmental level, the parents as potential cause and resource as well as the place of other relevant systems in the child’s life. A huge toolbox of techniques is a must which then has to be suited for the individual child.

This course is intended to give an in-depth survey of common referral problems (e.g. internalizing problems like anxiety and depression, encompresis and enuresis, externalizing problems like anger and acting out).

Each session will include a broad discussion of how such problems evolve, both from an individual dynamic to systemic family approaches. Potential ways of dealing with problems will be worked on via determining the best port of entry and the use of specific techniques will be taught experientially. An up-to-date list of reading material will be given to each participant to complement the course.
